Academic Coach - Job Description for Math Instructor
Zealous Schools (www.zealousschools.org), a non-profit, independent, micro-school (grades 6-8) in the Vail Valley, is hiring a full-time Academic Coach (AC) to begin August 1, 2020.
As an instructor, the AC must listen carefully to the passions and strengths of each child they instruct and design academic units and lessons around those two key areas. A successful AC will have proven experience instructing kids, following their own passions and strengths within their specific academic subject of math, and exemplary collaboration skills for working as a team member. They will possess a working knowledge of project based learning, Bloom’s taxonomy, Maslow’s hierarchy, multiple intelligences, and the Montessori philosophy of education (although we not officially affiliated with the Montessori model). They will also show a willingness to learn Google Education Suite tools, khan academy, and subject-specific tools that inspire children.
As a mentor, the AC must be willing to ‘walk in the shoes’ of their students, anticipating the coaching that each student needs to move themselves forward as a person and student, and responding by designing ‘strengths-based’ learning opportunities that transcend academic skills. Students will also be instructed in soft skills such as: communication, self-advocacy, time management and personal organization.
Each AC will run an advisory section that seeks to provide highly-personalized mentorship interactions with a group of 6-8 students. A successful mentor will review admissions files for each child prior to their arrival, develop awareness for their passions, strengths & preferred learning modality, collect their plans for high school and college, and design their support accordingly.
