The AMI Village Manager (VM) serves as residential leader, mentor and mediator to the AMI Fellows. This is a seasonal position, managing the day-to-day operations of the Village Campus, Kitchen and Fellowship schedule, at our Highland County Campus. The VM mentors AMI Fellows in community development, ecological living and use of kitchen garden, and models best practices to promote cohort development. The ideal candidate will have at least one season of experience working on a vegetable farm, experience living in intentional community, and be comfortable mentoring and teaching peers. Work hours may fluctuate and are dependent on the time of year and organizational needs.

The VM will work closely with the Education Director and Farm Manager on farm planning and management as well as curriculum development and instruction, and assists in planning and facilitating educational sessions, workshops, field trips and other events. The VM assists both the Education Director and Farm Manager, and reports directly to the Education Director. In addition, the VM will work with AMI staff to provide Fellow check-ins to assess Fellow growth and needs.

Education of the broader community is a key component of the Allegheny Mountain Institute, and a competitive applicant will have an interest in this area. All of our work is rooted in organic, regenerative agricultural practices; the AMI Village Manager should have a deep philosophical and operational agreement with such methods.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/ TASKS

Communication and Relationship Building

• Mentors Fellows in community development, ecological living and use of kitchen garden; models best practices at all times
• Promotes cohort development and helps mediate community conflicts as needed
• Works with Education Director to plan and facilitate educational sessions, workshops, field trips
and other events
• Works with AMI staff to provide Fellow check-ins to assess Fellow growth and needs
• First responder to emergencies by calling Emergency Services or 911

Program Assistance

• As needed, assists Farm Manager in all aspects of fruit and vegetable production and animal husbandry at the farm including but not limited to: planning, planting, harvesting, post-harvest processing, animal care, records, maintenance, supply procurement, sales and storage
• Coordinates logistical and overnight needs for workshop instructors and overnight guests; prepares community meals during full day workshops

Organization Management

• Manages and maintains Village Calendars, chore rotations and vacation days to ensure well- kept, healthy village, cohort, and outbuildings
• Works with Fellows to manage Village food production, use and storage; manages and replenishes supplemental groceries
• Manages petty cash and submits monthly reports to AMI Administrative Manager

Records and Reporting

• Reports facility maintenance needs to Farm Manager
• Reports and records all accidents, illnesses, medical or other emergencies according to the protocol set forth in the AMI Village Policy Manual
• Submits weekly report communicating village needs, events and experiences of past and coming weeks to Education Director
• Reviews Village and Farm record keeping for quality control; may allocate some aspects of the record keeping to the cohort as prudent
• Inspects Village Spring daily during dry season and reports water level to AMI Caretaker

Outreach and Event Coordination

• Coordinates and supports community event marketing (Open Houses, Community Workshops, Public Visits, Farm Stays, etc.) and logistics
• Ensures guest signatures on AMI Waiver of Liability
• Organizes documentation by photo and/or video of events, farm activities, and guest lecture activities; emails photos/videos to AMI Administrative Manager
• Maintains blog schedule; submit Fellow’s blogs to AMI Administrative Manager
• Uploads current photos to AMI Facebook page and social media, as directed by AMI Administrative Manager
• Coordinates and ensures prompt mailing of thank you letters written by Fellows

QUALIFICATIONS: KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Bachelor’s Degree or an equivalent amount of training and/or work experience (required)
• At least one season of experience working on an organic vegetable farm (required)
• Experience living and/or working in intentional community (required)
• Certification in First Aid/CPR (desired)
• One year of experience in animal husbandry (desired)
• Comfort mentoring and/or teaching peers
• Ability to manage complex projects with tight deadlines
• Conflict and Mediation Skills (desired)
• Flexible problem solver
• Knowledge of and commitment to building sustainable food systems
• Exceptional multi-tasking, organizational and time management skills
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both written and verbal)
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
• Experienced crew leader
• Computer proficiency, including Excel, Microsoft Office
• Experience in culinary arts/hospitality
• Demonstrates high level of personal and ethical standards
• Ability to understand, interpret and enforce policies in an accurate and equitable manner.
• Ability to complete and maintain applicable training and certifications as necessary
• Has a valid driver’s license with a good driving record
• Ability to deal with Fellows, colleagues, and guests in a professional, timely, fair, and confidential manner

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITION:
Work will take place in multiple locations in a farm setting: outdoor working farm, office environment and kitchens. Applicants must be physically fit, able to lift 50 pounds, walk distances up and down steep hills, work outdoors for extended periods of the day, and be comfortable living and working communally as a team in a remote, mountain setting.

COMPENSATION:
This is a non-exempt, 40 hours per week, part time, seasonal position, available as soon as possible and extending through to November 30, 2017. The base salary is $1,250 per month. Benefit package includes: lodging, meals during Fellowship season with AMI Cohort, workers’ compensation coverage, earned vacation/sick leave, plus holidays (according to AMI Personnel Policy Manual). This position requires occasional weekend and periodic evening work.
