We are seeking a talented individual to join our senior administration and help take an already strong development program to the next level. The Director of Development is responsible for the planning, organizing, and implementation of Hawthorne Valley Association’s fundraising, including annual giving, special events, corporate and foundation sponsorships, communications, capital campaigns, and major donor cultivation. The Association currently raises more than $1 million each year through a variety of measures, and our recently completed strategic plan points us toward a growth program that will deepen our programming while expanding our activities. We want more people to have access to healthy food, more land to be reclaimed for organic and biodynamic farming, more children and adults to benefit from holistic education, and for the kind of vibrancy in life that we enjoy here to be shared with communities everywhere.
We seek candidates who embrace our mission and values and possess the energy, enthusiasm, and personal and professional capacities that will allow them to be a strong team player. The ideal candidate will be an entrepreneurial professional who enjoys front-line relationship building, soliciting, developing, and driving strategies with senior leadership, and demonstrating creativity and savvy to make connections and secure in-person appointments. The candidate must be able to articulate the case to support the goals of Hawthorne Valley for the purpose of securing major gifts and pledges. The position requires significant local travel and occasional long-distance travel with emphasis on numerous face-to-face donor meetings. The person who fills this position will be responsible for meeting specific annual revenue goals and contributing to the overall achievement of the Association’s goals.
Specific tasks include:
• Implement programs/activities to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward donors.
• Oversee movement of donor/prospect visits, solicitation, and gift closure for other staff members, volunteers, Association leadership, and board members.
• Execute events and other fundraising activities that advance the Association’s relationship with donors/prospects.
• Prepare written documents in support of solicitation, cultivation, and development events, including correspondence, strategic plans, invitations, and reports. Develop highly-tailored proposals.
• Lead targeted development activities for initiative areas within the Association (ex., the Waldorf School) and maintain regular meetings with staff heads and key volunteers.
• Represent Hawthorne Valley at conferences and events throughout the country.
Our ideal candidate will possess strong written and verbal skills, budgeting experience, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. The candidate must demonstrate success in closing major gifts and be proficient in event planning and campaign management. We also require proficiency in Raiser’s Edge and Microsoft Office, as well as knowledge of the tax laws that impact charitable giving. The Director should be just as comfortable touring visitors through our dairy barns as they would be welcoming guests to a donor reception at a major donor’s Central Park South home. We prefer that our candidates have a bachelor’s degree with 7 years’ minimum experience in professional fundraising.
