Primary Function: The Lorado Taft Field Campus is Northern Illinois University’s outdoor education and conference center and is located in Oregon, Illinois. Taft Campus’ outdoor education program is generally multidisciplinary, place-based, and experiential, and planned in close partnership with the visiting schools with the goal of providing excellent programming and customer service to the visiting students and staff. Under the direct supervision of the Director, Lorado Taft Environmental Education, the Extension Faculty Supervisor oversees resident and day-only outdoor education experiences for elementary and middle school students at the Lorado Taft Campus with responsibility for the hiring, supervising, training, and mentoring of Outdoor Education Instructors and teaching classes in the outdoor environment.

Duties and Responsibilities (Generally):
A. Instruction – Research, plan, develop, deliver, evaluate, and supervise informal outdoor education instruction for elementary and middle school students.
B. Relationship Management—Build relationships both internally and externally to further informal outdoor education
C. Revenue Generation – Secure, lead and manage financially sustainable programs that cover all costs including personnel on program teams, generate a revenue stream, and allocate revenue appropriately.
D. Research – Collaborate with OERD colleagues and faculty in the colleges and with school partners to conduct research on issues related to informal outdoor education.
E. Regional Monitoring—Conduct ongoing monitoring of the region in order to assess outdoor education needs, build networks, identify innovations, and find sources of revenue for programming.

Minimum Required Qualifications:
1. High school graduation or GED
2. Any one or any combination that equals four (4) years/ 48 months of responsible volunteer or professional work experience in coordinating educational and/or community programs or activities
a. Volunteer/Work experience coordinating educational and/or community programs or activities
b. College coursework in any field of study
• 60 semester hours equals two (2) years (24 months)
• 90 semester hours equals three (3) years (36 months)
• 120 semester hours or more equals four (4) years (48 months)
3. Demonstrated work experience in outdoor/environmental education programming.
4. Demonstrated work experience in preparing lesson plans, outlines, or guides in preparation to teach or facilitate activities.
5. Demonstrated work experience in the administration of youth programs, residential programs, nature centers, or other related outdoor programs, including work experience in training and supervising staff.

Civil Service Education and Experience Required:

1. Strong written and oral communication skills
2. Skill in collaborating with diverse audiences (ethnicity, socioeconomic, ages)

5. Ability to independently organize and prioritize work
6. Ability to compile, organize, and maintain complex files, records, and/or reports
7. Ability to learn marketing/promotion techniques for program activities
8. Ability to use Windows-based computer applications, standard office, presentation and communications equipment

Education and Experience Preferred:
• Bachelor’s degree in outdoor education, administration, natural sciences or a related field
• Three years’ experience in outdoor/environmental education programming.
• Two years’ experience in a position that includes facilitating team building and/or challenge course activities.
• One year experience in administration or leadership of youth programs, residential programs, nature centers, or other related outdoor programs.
• One year experience in training and supervising program staff and/or volunteers.
• Experience in preparing lesson plans, outlines, or guides in preparation to teach or facilitate activities.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Critical to Performance:
o Demonstrated ability to work independently and manage work time effectively with little supervision to ensure preparedness and project completion.
o Demonstrated competence in verbal communication, particularly the ability to present information, ideas, directions, etc. in a clear and concise manner.
o Flexibility and the ability to deal with the unexpected and quickly changing nature of outdoor activities and children.
o Demonstrated professionalism as related to the field.
o Ability to effectively engage in behavior management in order to maintain students’ interest and participation in outdoor classes and activities.
o Ability to convey information about environmental topics without bias and with the goal of encouraging lifelong learning.
o Proficient using basic desktop programs such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Blackboard, and Outlook.
o Detail and customer service oriented.
o Demonstrated initiative to go above and beyond minimum assigned duties.
o Ability to oversee facility management in the absence of facility leadership.
o Ability to work effectively with co-workers and supervisors to achieve the goals of the program
o Ability to live in required onsite housing. A private apartment is provided.
o Ability to travel across the region to consult with teachers.

Physical Demands:
Ability to hike hilly, uneven terrain and be on feet for several hours at a time.
Ability to live in provided, on-campus housing.
