ORION SEEKS A FEATURES EDITOR
Orion magazine, a nonprofit quarterly publication about nature and culture, seeks a Features Editor to join our creative and hard-working team.
As a senior member of Orion’s staff, the Features Editor will be expected to actively help steward an institutional culture that is grounded in collaboration, transparency, enthusiasm for others’ ideas, and generosity of spirit.
The Features Editor’s main responsibilities will include the acquisition and editing of feature-length manuscripts (2-4 per issue), as well as acquiring and editing content for some of Orion’s departments, including Lay of the Land and Enumeration. The Features Editor will be responsible for seeing that the feature articles found in each issue reflect the diversity and balance that Orion strives to achieve, both in terms of authorship and topic/theme. The Features Editor will also supervise other editors and contributors who shape the magazine’s content, in both features and departments.
Other duties related to this position include: reviewing and evaluating submissions to the magazine; overseeing the work of the blog editor; support for Orion’s social media efforts; support for Orion-related events (including the annual Orion writing workshop); support for and engagement with Orion’s fundraising and grant writing efforts; and support for non-editorial organizational communications as necessary. In addition to MS Word and Excel, they will need proficiency in Google Docs, Dropbox, and Basecamp.
The Features Editor will share our belief in the power of good writing and will have a solid grounding in environmental thinking. They will have enthusiasm for both print and digital media, will take direction easily, and will also have the ability to independently take on projects from start to finish. They will have a deep interest in Orion’s core subjects and style.
The successful candidate will have at least five years’ experience as an editor for a general-interest or literary magazine, including a proven track record with acquisition and an established roster of writers. They will be highly organized, flexible, and especially skilled at convening conversations that prioritize others’ ideas and creative contributions, and will take joy in helping others succeed.
The Features Editor should personify exemplary managerial competencies such as self- observation, self-management, interpersonal awareness, attention to communication, personal credibility, empowerment of others, facilitating collaboration, and providing motivational support.
The Features Editor will report to the Editor-in-Chief and will supervise other staff members who provide editorial support.
