Seeking French Language Teacher to join the faculty of Maine Coast Semester at Chewonki

History of Maine Coast Semester at Chewonki

Now in its 30th year, Maine Coast Semester at Chewonki serves academically ambitious high school juniors from across the United States and around the world. What draws this diverse student body to Maine’s Midcoast is an insatiable curiosity about the natural world; a commitment to environmental stewardship; and the desire to be part of a uniquely progressive learning community.

The Maine Coast Semester School at Chewonki is seeking a growth-minded, part-time, French teacher starting August 2019. Responsibilities include teaching honors levels French III-Advanced Placement courses.

Candidates should have a high level of interest in teaching exceptionally motivated high school juniors in a semester school that not only values intellectual pursuits but also building strong relationships and fostering a sustainable community. The ideal candidate is an excellent communicator who is comfortable using a variety of instructional strategies and enjoys working creatively and collaboratively to develop and plan curricula.

Successful candidates must have a proven record of engaging students in place-based learning, fostering critical reading and writing skills, and inspiring a love of learning.

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

The French teacher instructs all French students each semester. As our students arrive with diverse language backgrounds, and their sending schools request various topics to be covered during their time here, it is imperative that this teacher commits him/herself to meet students’ individual needs. Chewonki World language classes are inherently creative and student-centered, allowing students to utilize their French in activities and projects that connect them to the natural world and understand a variety of French-speaking cultures.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

- Teaching 2 sections of the honors French III-Advanced Placement courses
- Offering academic support for students outside of class

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

- Attend faculty meetings as necessary

PREREQUISITES:

- Must Pass Background Criminal Check and complete fingerprinting requirements of the Maine Department of Education
- A minimum of CPR and First Aid certification
- Driver’s License approved by Chewonki’s insurance carrier to drive participants
