The Community School of Mount Desert Island is seeking an innovative, dynamic, and creative educator to lead our multi-age grade 3/4 class. This position begins August 2019. The ideal candidate will have experience in Place-Based education and teaching in a multi-age setting, both in the classroom and field. The candidate will be well-rounded, comfortable teaching all subject areas, and possess general natural history knowledge and a familiarity with the Maine Coast. A State of Maine Teaching certificate is required. We are seeking an educator who embraces collaboration with current faculty, families, and our local community.
Located along a tidal creek and salt marsh in Somesville, Maine, the school occupies a historic farmhouse surrounded by field and forest. We are a state-certified, independent school, incorporating a variety of teaching methods in our Place-Based model. Connection to one another and to the place we live is important to us and our learning. We are a tight-knit community, one that cooks a meal together on Friday afternoon, and conducts weekly all school meetings in which we practice mindful listening and make decisions together. Both teachers and children are caretakers of the schoolhouse and property. Additionally, we extend our stewardship to the surrounding landscapes and communities of Acadia National Park and Maine Coast Heritage Trust preserves.
Our strong academics are rooted in what is developmentally appropriate for each child. Small class sizes allow for a balance of collaborative and collective learning, as well as individualized attention. Our “Expedition” unit is interdisciplinary -- focused around science and social studies. The “Math Workshop,” (based on Eureka Math) and “Language Arts Workshop,” (based on Lucy Calkins Units of Study) use active and engaging learning to explore arithmetic, reading, and writing. A weekly “Outing” affords off campus study and continued collaboration and stewardship with local people and places. Weekly specialty classes in Music, Spanish, and Handwork complement the curriculum and are taught by skilled educators within the local community.
