Now in its 30th year, Maine Coast Semester at Chewonki serves academically ambitious high school juniors from across the United States and around the world. Maine Coast Semester at Chewonki is seeking a growth-minded educator to lead all aspects of the program’s residential life program.

The Dean of Students will bring insights and innovations to Maine Coast Semester at Chewonki, through their deep understanding of residential programs, which include advising, dorms (cabins), and health services, in order to purposefully link various elements into a cohesive student life experience.

The Dean of Students is a member of Maine Coast Semester’s leadership and health teams, and works collaboratively with the head of the semester school to support the program’s vision and goals.

The Dean of Students works in partnership with the school’s faculty and staff in order to foster the dispositions and practices that promote the habits of a thriving, sustainable, and inclusive community.

The Dean of Students is responsible for developing a clearly articulated semester school vision for outdoor and wilderness learning experiences, that includes facilitating student access to and experience in the outdoors throughout the semester.

The Dean of Students is responsible for the development and implementation of an array of essential program pieces, which includes an immersive student orientation that enables students to become successful, contributing members of an immersive learning community; as well as end-of-semester programming that enables students to successfully transition back to their sending school and home setting.

The ideal candidate has a high level of interest in working with exceptionally motivated high school juniors in a semester school that values both intellectual pursuits, as well as building strong relationships with students and colleagues.

Additionally, the candidate has a proven record of success working with students outside a traditional classroom setting; is an excellent communicator who understands best practices for promoting the social and emotional well-being of adolescents; has experience using the principles of Restorative Practice in a school setting; and enjoys working creatively and collaboratively with fellow educators.

Preferred qualifications include:

- Ability to develop effective working relationships with all constituencies including students, families, faculty, and administration.
- Ability to allow for ambiguity; and to analytically and strategically solve complex educational problems; to work on teams and to participate effectively with colleagues from all parts of the Chewonki Foundation.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to adapt your message to students, families, faculty, and administration.
- Willingness to embrace the lifestyle of working and living in a dynamic semester school by being a team-player, eagerly assuming many roles, and devoting the time required to model excellence in job performance.
- Commitment to active collaboration while also possessing the internal, self-starter motivation to learn independently.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

- The supervision of all aspects of the residential life program.
- Ongoing development and implementation of Maine Coast Semester’s social curriculum
- Teach one class
- Serve as an advisor for 3-4 students and as a mentor for a cabin of 6-8 students
- Work with students three days a week on morning chores
- Assume rotating evening and weekend duty assignments
- Take on other semester school responsibilities based on skills and interests

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

- Live full-time on the Chewonki campus and share meals with the community
- Help to plan weekend activities, wilderness trips, etc.
- Contribute to the Chewonki community through participation in chores, committees and Foundation-wide events

PREREQUISITES

- Must have 3-5 years of teaching experience
- Must Pass Background Criminal Check and complete fingerprinting requirements of the Maine Department of Education
- Driver’s License approved by Chewonki’s insurance carrier to drive participants

REQUISITES

- Attend classroom driver’s training prior to driving participants
- Attend annual trainings conducted by the Chewonki health center

SALARY AND BENEFITS

Salary is in-line with that of other small northern New England boarding schools and will be based largely on experience. Room and board are included as part of living on campus. This is a full-time residential position on an August to mid-June schedule (~10 weeks vacation/year). Benefits include housing, meals, health insurance, life insurance, dental insurance, long term disability, 403B retirement plan (currently matching up to 4.5% after one year of service) and access to professional development funds.
