Context: As part of a team fighting for an equitable transition to 100% clean energy in California, this position focuses on mobilizing Los Angeles residents against sources of pollution disproportionately impacting Black, Brown, immigrant, and working class communities, and accelerating the retirement of fossil fuel power plants to be replaced with clean energy resources like solar and battery storage. Provides primary leadership in developing and implementing programs and efforts that build grassroots power, by increasing the number of people involved, supporting leadership development, and engaging people with influence to achieve our movement building goals. Practices the Jemez Principles and centers organizational Equity Values within organizing work.

Scope: The Senior Organizing Representative is responsible for recruiting, engaging, and motivating large numbers of new people to take repeated action to further Sierra Club’s targeted movement, program, and campaign goals. Identifies and develops volunteers to take on the role of team leaders and to build grassroots power and networks. The Senior Organizing Representative has overall program responsibility and provides experienced leadership and strategic planning for at least one major clean energy/conservation campaign or program. Plans, develops, and evaluates the success of organizing strategies. Identifies and builds alliances with other organizations which can influence decision makers and acts as a senior lobbyist.

Job Activities include but are not limited to:

- Leads community and power mapping through an equity lens to understand the character, needs, issues, dynamics, and governing structure of the communities in which we organize.

- Directs organizing activities of one or more major campaigns or programs. Works closely with national and regional volunteers and staff to develop an organizing plan to achieve campaign and program goals, oversees implementation of the plan and program budget/expenses.

- Works with staff to identify opportunities to advance the Sierra Club’s diversity initiatives and incorporate them into organizing plans.

- Identifies and develops volunteers who will take on the role of team leaders to build our grassroots power and networks. Inspires and motivates leaders to succeed by training and coaching volunteer leaders on strategy, organizing, and political and professional development.

- Supports and provides senior level professional expertise to local, regional, and national volunteers and to fellow staff.

- Evaluates changing conditions and modifies organizing plans accordingly. Uses qualitative and quantitative data to plan, record, and measure success and goals of power building work with a focus on learning and innovation. Utilizes and encourages peers to utilize the department’s current movement technology tools.

- Supports the media department with outreach activities; develops media outreach plans; serves as a Sierra Club spokesperson to local, regional, and national media outlets; promotes volunteer media exposure.

- Represents the Sierra Club in regional and national coalitions, and to the general public, government officials, the media, and public forums.
Supports the Advancement Department in cultivating and developing effective relationships with donors and foundations within or with an interest in the assigned communities, and in the development of organizing objectives and strategies as part of grant projects and proposals.

- In support of the National Political Program, identifies opportunities to advance the Club’s conservation priorities through relationships with elected officials and via electoral campaigns. Assists the National Political Program in developing organizing strategies to reach political program objectives. Assures compliance with election laws and regulations.

- Develops and supervises grasstop networks and cultivates relationships with public officials. Develops relationships with elected public officials and their staff. Oversees development and implementation of lobby campaigns within the region and nationally.
Introduces creative ideas and approaches for consideration. May handle some assignments beyond the home region for the good of the national organization.

- Performs miscellaneous projects and duties as assigned.
Seasonal Activities:

Heavier seasonal workloads may occur as a result of project deadlines, staff absences and vacancies, and during peak activity periods. Frequent weekend and/or evening work required.

The successful candidate must have the following skills and experience:

- Equity Analysis and Practice. You are aware of your group identities and how they have shaped your life and experiences at work. You have an analysis of how racism and other forms of oppression in society impact relationships, systems and culture. You bring experience and skills for working effectively with colleagues across group identities and position/role.

- Los Angeles Field Organizing Experience. 3-5 years' experience as a Field Organizer in Los Angeles, or in a comparable position in another organization which includes planning and managing grassroots campaign strategy, organizing, lobbying, media, program management, budget planning and working with political leaders.

- Volunteer Engagement. Some experience and effectiveness working with and inspiring volunteers to step into leadership roles.

The strongest candidates will also demonstrate the following experience, skills and competencies:

- Experience in the strategic planning and direction of campaigns and programs.
- Demonstrated effective oversight in implementing campaign plans.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills. Demonstrated public speaking and media presentation ability.
- Demonstrated skill and ability in local and regional media relations. Includes effective television and radio presence, knowledge of media technologies including video, radio, and print production processes.
- B.A./B.S. degree in Environmental Studies, Political Science, or a closely related field.
- Emotional resilience, adaptability, and self-care practitioner.
- English-Spanish bilingual.
- Expert lobbying ability; experience using oral and written communication to influence members of the legislature; ability forming relationships and leading meetings with elected officials to influence public policy.

Valid driver’s license, satisfactory driving record, and proof of auto insurance required. A background check will be required upon acceptance of the position.
The salary for this position is $72,000, non-negotiable.

This position is represented by a collective bargaining unit and is subject to the terms and conditions of the contract between Sierra Club and Progressive Workers Union.

This is a category 3 exempt position.
