Reporting to the Vice President and Executive Director for Audubon Washington and working in close coordination with the National Campaign and Policy teams, the Washington State Campaign Manager is charged with building political power and executing the National Audubon Society’s priorities within Washington, while effectively leveraging and building upon the organization’s grassroots and grasstops assets. As part of the state office, the Campaign Manager will spearhead the integration and coordination of a multidisciplinary team to plan, implement and win Audubon’s policy campaigns. The Manager is responsible for developing and leading the overall vision for implementation of multi-year campaigns in the state, to include: identifying goals, strategy and tactics; establishing messaging and overseeing outreach and media needs; determining how to leverage and align staff resources when possible; managing oversight on tracking, evaluation and accountability; and coordinating with campaign partners.
The Campaign Manager will be based in Seattle, although other locations may be considered. Additionally, this role is grant-funded and anticipated to last 3 years, with the potential to continue pending funding and programmatic needs.
In consultation with key Audubon staff, design and manage all aspects of priority policy campaigns in Washington, including identifying goals, strategy, targets, and tactics; establishing messaging and media needs; work plans and timelines.
Support the State Executive Director’s engagement in the state-level campaign as the spokesperson and state leader.
Work closely with the state and national campaigns team to develop long-term strategic plans for building power and advancing our climate and other policy priorities at the local, state and ultimately the federal level.
Integrate and coordinate campaign work across programmatic departments.
Responsible for mentoring, managing and directing the work of the state’s Field Organizer. As needed, help manage consultants such as lobbyists, issue experts, and/or communications professionals, in addition to field work.
Lead and/or represent Audubon in coalition work.
Coordinate and oversee the digital and field departments as they relate to the campaign.
Build new and leverage strong, strategic relationships with a diverse set of in state organizations needed to advance the policy campaign.
Track and monitor campaigns. Provide regular updates to leadership on campaign progress and outputs, such as letters to the editor, outreach activities, in-district meetings, etc.
Work with Development staff to identify grant and donor opportunities; support as needed.
Qualifications and Experience
5-7 years of related professional experience in campaigns, grassroots advocacy, including at least 3 years managing staff and teams, and experience in signature gathering, phone banks, building coalitions, and other grassroots realms. An equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered.
Established background in clean energy and other climate-related issues highly desired.
Demonstrated management experience of campaigns, people and budgets. Experience running grassroots issue campaigns at the local, state, or federal level necessary.
Must have exceptional leadership skills with the proven ability to oversee and mentor professional staff while working effectively in a team-based environment.
Excellent written and verbal communications skills and the ability to build consensus among a wide range of individuals. Must be comfortable with public speaking.
Demonstrated experience overseeing multiple complex or multifaceted projects through to success, including meeting financial goals, and project deadlines.
A self-starter who is motivated and able to work in a decentralized work environment with minimal supervision and experience coordinating with staff and partners.
Thorough understanding of advocacy, communications, and grassroots engagement. Experience working with diverse constituencies ranging from race, income level to political views required.
Experience leveraging social media and digital mobilizing tools to advance policy priorities.
Demonstrated success working in coalitions and building nontraditional partnerships.
A strategic thinker, one with outstanding interpersonal skills, judgment, and a demonstrated ability to collaborate and build coalitions.
Tech-savvy, with proficiency in MS Office applications, campaign/advocacy tools and other online software.
Willingness to travel across the state, as well as throughout Audubon network, including the possibility of some regional or national travel. Must have a flexible approach to work, including comfort working evenings and weekends as the job responsibilities demand.
